John 17:4
“I have glorified You on earth, having accomplished
the work which You have given Me to do.”

Over the past two weeks we’ve contemplated what it means to live with a big picture perspective. We’ve considered why living with a big picture perspective ultimately means living our lives for God’s glory. We further explored why the first step in doing so involves a personal relationship with Jesus in which He is not only our Savior, but also our Lord. This week, I want to discuss one additional way we can live our lives with a big picture perspective and bring God glory and that is living out our specific purpose.

Perhaps one of the most impactful verses regarding our purpose on earth was spoken by Jesus Himself. In John 17:4 as Jesus was praying just prior to His arrest and crucifixion He said, “I have glorified You on earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.” In the same way Jesus’s glorified God by accomplishing the work God the Father gave Him to do, this is one way we can glorify God with our lives as well.

So let me ask, do you believe God has specific work for you to accomplish during your time on earth? Do you trust God has a unique plan and purpose just for you?

Ephesians 2:10 tells us: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Let that sink in for a minute. You are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for you to do.

So there you have it my friend; if no one has ever told you before, let me tell you, God has a special plan and purpose for you! He made with you with specific gifts, talents, strengths, and abilities. He put you on this earth, at this time, for a reason! God has an assignment for you.

Consider that God made you exactly who you are to fulfill His divine purpose. We each have different spheres of influence, different purposes, different works to complete. We each have been created differently to fulfill these good works. I mean, isn’t it amazing to think before we were even born, God created each one of us uniquely so we would be fully equipped to impact the world in a way no one else can? You have a purpose, a calling, only you are gifted to fulfill.

Do you know what your specific purpose is? Are you completing your assignment and fulfilling your unique part in God’s greater story?

If so, let me be the first to say way to go! Don’t stop, keep going! For those of you who are unsure what your specific purpose is, commit to intentionally seek God and ask Him. Develop your strengths, step out of your comfort zone, and boldly seize the opportunities God places in front of you.

Life is short. Live yours with a big picture perspective and live out your purpose for God’s glory today!
