Philippians 1:6
“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work
until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

Have you ever considered that God never wastes a moment to prepare you for what He has prepared for you?

Said another way, God doesn’t waste one moment of our lives, the good, the bad, or the ugly. He uses it all to accomplish the works that He has prepared for us.

I was reminded of this truth the other day when reading the story of David. Yes, that David, the small fella who defeated the huge giant. I’m guessing that most anyone reading this, Bible-believer or not, is familiar with the story. David, the young Israelite boy boldly defeated (through God’s strength) the massive Philistine giant who was terrorizing God’s people. While we are all familiar with the overall story and of course the famous ending, there is one detail in the story that I believe is key, but often overlooked.

To re-cap, David was a young shepherd, the youngest of his brothers and was left behind to tend sheep while three of his older brothers went off to fight the Philistines. When David’s dad sent him on an errand to deliver food to his brothers David heard Goliath’s taunts against the Israelites. Outraged that Goliath would dare to defy God’s people in such a manner, David told King Saul that he would fight the giant.

Pretty big offer from such a small guy! So why did David do it? None of the warriors in Israel’s Army had offered to slay the giant, so why David? I am convinced that the answers lies in 1 Samuel 17:37. After recounting to Saul how he had battled against a bear and a lion while tending sheep, David told King Saul, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”

I love this!

Just think, while David was out minding his own business, completing his hum drum shepherding tasks God was preparing him for something far greater.

Even more, God was showing David His faithfulness and power. When David faced the bear and the lion he had no idea what God had in store for him down the road with a giant named Goliath!

Do you get where I am going with this? I have chills. In the same way God used events in David’s seemingly routine everyday life to prepare him for a monstrous task that we are still talking about some 3000 years after the fact, God may be doing the same in your life today!

Don’t wish away the season you are in, or the work currently set before you. God may be using this very time to prepare you for something you have never even dreamed of.

It may be that you will look back 10 years from now and realize that God used something now, good, bad, or otherwise to prepare you for what’s in store.

How might God be using the season you are currently in to prepare you for something greater tomorrow?

Can you look back now and identify a season, time, or incident that God is currently using to fulfill His purpose for you even though you didn’t see it at the time? If so, I’d love to hear about it!
