Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

I absolutely love to read the Biblical account of Joshua.  We can learn so many lessons from his life and leadership; however, today I wanted to discuss one point that repeatedly stands out to me in his story.  As a quick re-cap, the book of Deuteronomy closes with the death of Moses and the book of Joshua continues the story of the Israelites journey to the Promised Land.  After years of slavery in Egypt, 40 years in the wilderness, and then the death of Moses, God appoints Joshua to take charge of the Israelites and finally cross the Jordan River into the Promised Land.  In Joshua chapter 1 God promises to give Joshua success in his journey; however, God does not promise that Joshua will have an easy road.  Quite the opposite is actually true.  God repeatedly tells Joshua to be “strong and courageous” as he follows God’s plan.  This proved to be great advice as Joshua had to lead the Israelites through numerous battles before they were able to enter the long awaited Promised Land.

In the same way, we cannot expect an easy road just because we know we are following God’s plan for our life.  In fact, we might face a very difficult road, so that we will rely on God and see His power alive in our lives.  If you are discouraged today because you are facing troubles while you are certain that you are in the center of God’s will, be strong and courageous!  Never forget that just like Joshua, the Lord your God is with you wherever you go!  Don’t give up!
